F1 Key needed to boot

January 5, 2012 at 14:48:09
Specs: Windows XP, Unsure CPU / 2 GB Ram
Need to press F1 to go to desktop when starting

Every time my Dad starts his computer, he gets a black screen with the one sentence saying Press F1 to continue, after he presses F1, it continues to the Win XP & desktop normally. Could this be a setting in BIOS that is messed up ? I have been looking for what the factory BIOS settings may have been but cannot find them anywhere. I think he was fooling with something, being bull headed, had it all messed up, got it straightened out except for this slight error.

I guess, you get something like BIOS checksum error. Press F1 to continue or F2 to enter setup, or something like that.
If so, the battery for the CMOS chip of the mainboard, which holds the BIOS settings, is empty and has to be changed.
