Hi, I seem to have 2 processes of IEXPLORE.exe running in my task manager even when I do not have Internet Explorer open. Each is using between 4000 and 5000k of memory and is under the user owner,(only 1 user acct on this machine). I can stop the process but they come back on the next reboot. When I do open IE it adds a 3rd process and it typically uses approx. 23,000k. Any ideas? Bluejay

Just looked at my PC - the IEXPLORE.exe is only there when I have IE running, then goes away when I close it.
Do you have any toolbars (Google etc.) associated with IE ? Maybe they are stragling along.

What is going on in the startup files? Does msconfig or hijackthis reveal anything wanting to open a browser?
What if you turn off your PC, then unplug the network cable (or disable wireless) then startup the PC...does it report anything related to can't find an address type thing? Could also check the event logs to see what is starting the service.

Hi, Derek it is definately IEXPLORE.exe. That was the first thing that I looked for having seen that posted here before. Dingo. I will look into that. I did run a hjt about 2 months ago and I didn't find anything that "I" thought was out of the ordinary. What type of listing should I be looking for in hjt? I have dsl and if I turn off my modem then on again I do not get any errors. Will check event logs today. Thanks Bluejay

There are several websites around where you can pop in your HJT log and run an auto test. This old one still seems the best, to my mind:
http://www.hijackthis.deYou can pretty well accept anything with green ticks but the questionable or supposedly malicious ones need to be carefully looked into.
Sometimes they are safe programs that have just not filtered through to the website. So use your noddle and do a bit of googling around on all the questionable items before letting HJT remove any of them.
I don't know the reason for your multiple iexplore.exe entries and I've all but opted out as a helper around these parts. It might be worth you wading through this lot I found in google tho:

There are many pages of it and at a glance it looked like at least one of them thought they had found the answer....some other bloke...
