I'm trying to install and external HP CD burner, model
7200e. It connects to the parallel port. XP recognizes
something there and asks for the driver. I've downloaded
the XP driver from HP. However, after going throught the
install and rebooting it locks up the system and I have
to disconnect the external CD drive in order to bring up
the system again. I've tried removing and re-installing
the drivers over and over again and still have had no
luck. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

David

I even took it apart and installed it in my box but it still does not work. I have to duel boot to ME to get the thing to work

First remove software from HP burner from the comp and even the burner too, and get the XP LPT-driver from HP site.
When the comp is out of power disconnect the parallel cable.
Switch on the comp and install the XP-LPT driver.
Reboot and when the comp is ready for use connect the parallel cable while the comp is still on and XP will detect the burner.

Good luck

I have tried that, removing cable and installing drivers, but when the system
detects the new hardware it installs it
and then wants to reboot. When you reboot
the system hangs.

I had the same problem with the HP7200e
First I downloaded the WinXP_LPT_Driver.exe from HP and followed the HP instructions, it did work for me.
The instructions:
Installing the SCM Parallel Port Driver for the External HP CD-Writer Plus Drive in Windows XP
Use the following steps to install the SCM Parallel Port driver into Windows XP.
1. If necessary, print this document to reference to during the install sequence.
2. Shut down your computer.
3. Connect the external CD-Writer Plus drive, and make sure it is powered on.
4. Boot into Windows XP. The operating system should detect your newly connected drive, and run the "Found New Hardware Wizard."
Note: If the parallel port CD-Writer drive is not automatically detected by the operating system, run the “Add Hardware” wizard. The “Add Hardware” wizard can be accessed by clicking:
Start -> Control Panel ->Switch to Classic View -> Add Hardware
5. Select the Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) option and click Next
Found New Hardware Wizard
6. In the Search for the best driver in these locations section, un-check Search removable media (floppy, CD-ROM...) and place a check next to Include this location in the search:.
7. Type in or browse to C:\WinXP_LPT_Driver.exe or wherever you have that file copied to.
8. The Driver Selection dialog box may appear, with a caution that this driver is not digitally signed by Microsoft. This message is anticipated. Click Next.
9. Windows will then install the driver.
10. After Windows has installed the driver, you will see completion dialog. Click Finish to close the wizard dialog box. Your drive is ready to use. You may need to reboot in order to use this drive with the HP DLA software

Ive got an HP cd writer 8200 series and have just installed XP which doesnt like the software and wont install it. I downloaded new drivers from the HP website as they told me to but its still not working properly. I have managed to burn a very small data CD but music is out of the question. Its a real problem as im a graphic designer and need to use it regularly. What can I do? Someone suggested to try Nero software but Im angry about spending any more money. My system worked fine with ME perhaps I should go back?
