Hi, I have a new unformatted internal ATA 100 Seagate 250 GB HD and used it as external in a 2.0 HD enclosure plugged in to a 2.0 USB port and the problem is that is not recognized by the laptop. I have tried a different smaller HD with data on it already and is recognized fine. thanks

Sorry I forgotten to mention that the drive is not ruining it only makes a faint click click noise I had the same problem with a 200 GB Seagate and return it to Seagate for replacement and the new one Is doing the same noise and no recognition.

Does it show up in disc management as unallocated or not shown at all. If it is unallocated then it needs to be formatted. If it is not seen there then
1) the drive is not set up properly and needs to be made logical and formatted
or
2) the drive is bad
or
3)the usb connection is not working properlyas a side note....if the new drive is making strange noises I would contact seagate and see about returning that one also!

I'd definitely return the drive to Seagate (as per lurks...); a clicking drive is not good news - at any time.

Thank you for helping. I will email Seagate because like you say this one is making the same faint clicking noise and is not turning.
Note: all the other Hard drives I connected to the USB port and case are working fine.“The lack of knowledge in time of performance equal stress”
