I am adding an external harddrive to my laptop to store files and to clean up my main harddrive so I can regain some space and speed. When installing software, can I install it on the external drive and use the software on the computer? Does anyone have suggestions or tricks on the use of an external harddrive? I would very much appreciate info so I can make better use of my external harddrive. Thanks!!!

Hi ready2learn
My understanding is that the external HD should be used only as a backup system or secondary storage.
I may be wrong but I do not believe you can or could install programs on the external hard drive.

It would be entirely fine to use programs on external HDD's.
But when you use your computer without the HDD connected, don't try and use them, or run fixer apps like scanreg and Norton WinDoctor, since they will wonder where the hell the program is.
