Well, I don't have a Que external, but my son and I both run Maxtor externals. Both of us have games and applications on them. We both have 80 gig drives, but his is a 7200 and mine is 5400. I do notice his being more responsive in terms of speed.
My suggestion is to try what ever you want to place on the external, and if its not responsive enough for you, then uninstall and place the program on your internal.
No. I haven't turned mine off in almost 2 years and my son hasn't turned his off in about 4 months.
Although I keep my MP3s on my external, I also have Office XP on it and I have run games like Alice and Might and Magic 9 from it.
Good Luck again!

i believe an external hard drive is like an internal hard drive...only difference is that it's portable. Thus, you can install programs onto it and treat it as if it were part of the system, right? (ie: run games, programs, etc)
