Comment:
I recently purchased an extrenal hard drive for my computer. The question I have is that when I am done using it, is it better to just turn off the power or should I use the Windows "safetly remove hardware" icon in my toolbar. I have tried turning it off and then back on with no apparent problem. In the literature for the hard drive, it claims to be "hot-swappable" Thanks for the help!

Either will be fine, just DON'T reach over and unplug the USB cable before doing one or the other.
Data loss may result.

The correct order of disconnection is:
1. Invoke Safely remove hardware. (sometimes it may notify you with caution that the drive is locked or in use by some program and you should heed the warning) 2. Power off from the electrical source.

Do not remove the drives power without using the 'safely remove'. You might get away with 999 times out of 1000, but the one time that the OS has not finished writing to the drive might cause you a lot of grief.
Do yourself a favor BACKUP!
