You should have a recovery/repair option during boot up that should be able to fix things if they go bad (separate hard drive partition you cannot see). Look at your documentation or HP's website for instructions (print them out so they are available if you need them).
If your thinking about problems, but you system is working now, think about using your external drive to back up your important files on the outside chance your computer is ever not recoverable.
Look into repairing/replacing your internal drive if you are planning to keep it for a while.
