So my hard drive was starting to give me currupted jpeg and other files that were to long in file names so i wanted to check it for errors. I just did a chkdsk lastnight while i was sleeping on my AcomData DualDrive PRO 1.5TB Combo External Hard Drive. Before i did the restart for it to do the chkdsk i had 514GB Freespace and when it finnally finished it said i now have 140GB freespace. When open the hard drive and do select all and see how much space is used its 882GB so the 514 should still be there. i even have hidden and system files viewed. Even with Jdisk says im only using 882GB freespace. The problem is when i right click the Drive letter in MY computer and click propertys it says im using 1.2 TB of space and 10% is left. I dont know what happen during the chkdsk but its showing the wrong freespace on windows. This is an NTFS hard drive. How can i get my freespace to display properly? I am a video editor so i really need my freespace.. Im on Windows XP Service Pack 2.
here is a screen shot with treesize. as you can see 833gb are in use and 140gb are left out of 1,397gb. that makes no sense what so ever. should be around 564GB freespace if you take 1397-833. So where is the rest of it???
here is a treesize photo

A shot in the dark.
Rightclick on your Recycle Bin icon on desktop and check properties. What percentage of space is reserved on each drive for recycling?
Even though your image shows zero data in "recycler" the space is still reserved and unavailable for other uses.
Reducing the allocated percentage for that drive may free up some more space but with less than 15% free space the drive is considered "Full"
You should be transferring inactive files to optical media.
As this drive has also given you some corrupted files I would also suggest use of a manufacturers diagnostic tool to check drive integrity. I believe that will give a more thorough analysis than chkdsk
There is also an argument in favour of partitioning such a disk into a number of drives. EG one for your music files, another for programs, and another for your "Active" files such as DVD Authoring.
That way, archives such as music which has little write/rewrite activity do not become fragmented whereas your DVD authoring files which would be very active would fragment much more.
Defragging an entire 1.5Tb drive will take a loooong time. A smaller partition will defrag much faster when the time comes.
You might consider backing up all the data on the drive and starting afresh.

FunkTechNician, SWAG, maybe the discrepancy is nothing more than just the way the info's gathered? Defrag and check again? Maybe it simply needs to clear it's head?

I suspect that it is a combination of a 1tb drive and a 500gb drive. My guess is that the 500gb drive is no longer functioning, or the linking of the drives has been lost.
It might not be defective. XP has a habit of losing drives. It's happened to me more than once, and I have had to repartition the drives to get them back.
Check Disk Management to see what it says.
I would suggest using it as two drives (JBOD mode) instead of linking them.
By the way, I hope you are backing up regularly. It would be a crying! shame to lose all that data.

Might be worth lookin at System Restore, by default SR reserves 12% of disk space for Restore points.
You do the Math. 12% of 1.5TB?? Good argument for running as separate drives.
There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

This unit stripes two 750gig drives.
If it was a volume set of 1.0 and .5 gig and one drive died you would lose it all.
Same is true with this setup since it is raid0. You are only as good as your last backup with this setup. No backup means if a drive dies you lost everything.
Next time give serious consideration to mirroring the drives [raid 1.
Concerning the drive size, when was the last time you defragged the unit? Do so.
Did you run chkdsk /r? Do so. It checks for bad clusters.

i defrag it right before i did the chkdsk then again after. i did chkdsk /r and all the missing space is bas sectors. ive attached a url showing the chkdsk results

o ya im only using 10% which is like 4gb thats ok.

At this point I'd be willing to bet the bad sectors will continue to grow. They represent approx 50% of the capacity of one of your physical disks. That is an unacceptable and unrecoverable loss.
Replacement is your safest (only) option.
Not sure if you can run a makers diagnostic on each disk while in raid 0 configuration. You might be able to confirm that the bad sectors are only on one of your disks. bad news is that in raid 0 as previously stated, you lose all data when one disk fails. back up your data while you can.
Goin' Fishin' (Some day)

That is an absolutely incredible amount of bad sectors. So many that I wonder if it's really true.
I suggest that you download the diagnostics from the hard drive manufacturer's web site and run them. Watch out for any diagnostic that might erase your data. Check the following site for their URLs:
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm...Or talk to the people that you purchased the box from. I hope it's under warranty.
I wonder if it's a problem with the interface controller in the box rather then a drive problem.

here is the problem. the stupid hard drive company doesnt have anything. the website sucks i bought it at frys had i known they have pretty much little to no support.. ACOMDATA IS THE name of the hard drive.

ACOMDATA is the name of the box Funk, but I doubt if they make there own hard drives. You might have to open up the box to find out who makes the drives.
On second thought, you could download and run SIW. It might identify the drives.
In fact it will. I just tried it and it identified my external drives.

You need to get your data backed up NOW. If one drive dies you lost it all.
Forget about everything else until you get this done.
Then open the case and remove a drive. Contact the manufacturer for an RMA [return merchanized authorization]. Drives are warrentied for 3 years usually.
