For some reason, the shell, explorer.exe will not restart automatically upon termination.
For example, if I were to select explorer.exe, and select End Task, it will no longer restart by itself after being terminated, as it used to. I now must manually start it via the Run command.
I made sure the AutoRestartShell has a value of "1" under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
and also under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\WinlogonHowever, I also read (http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-2840633.php 4th thread) that the key was there for Windows 2000 but was removed
from Windows XP and 2003 server.I would really like to re-enable this feature, as I am confident it used to restart on its own.
Regards, and thanks for looking.

Addendum:
I do recall reading somewhere that it must actually crash for it to restart itself, and not simply if terminated intentionally.
Is that correct?

Correct. However sometimes even explorer will not 'restart' even when it should.
It's simple enough to restart it.
