I have a serious problem with XP. My computer runs really slow because of Explorer.exe's CPU usage! This problem appears after 3-10 minutes from reboot.
My mouse sometimes freezes for about 1/2 second. Please Help !

Athlon 1,1ghz
Motherboard: Asus A7V KT133-C
Graphic card: Asus V7700 (Geforce 2 gts)

I know what the problem is ... The "preview" of the .AVI files makes explorer.exe go crazy ! ... I found a way to remove this by a key in the register !

Now it works perfectly !

Do you remember which key it was? I'm having a similar problem.

Start -> Run -> type in: Regedit

Find the

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler\

directory and delete the "DEFAULT" key ! ... Voila ! ... Explorer.exe runs at 0-1% on idling !

This fix (regedit) totally fixed this problem for me. My system was hanging EVERY time I used explorer, tried to delete something, empty recycle bin, play a video, use winamp and a plethora of other things - Thanks a TON Richard - my computer is running at max now!

Thanks so much Richard!! :) been looking for a solution to that problem for a long time.. It only happened when I tried to modify or access a corrupted .avi

They should add this to the Microsoft Support Problem list...
