Explorer.exe problems (desktop)

Specs: WinXP, 3.2 GHz/512 MB
For the past 2 days now my desktop won't come up. It's a explorer.exe problem, so I get my background image yet no icons and no Start Bar or Taskbar at the bottom of the screen. I'm able to open Task Manager and run some programs through there EXCEPT my Anti-Virus software (2007 Trend Micro Pc-Cillin) and any Web browsers (IE or Firefox). Using TuneUp! Utilities 2006, some registry issues were found and fixed but still desktop won't come up. And even in Safe Mode desktop won't come up. I've tried also rebooting and using last settings that worked and still nothing. I don't know what else to do, I don't have a recovery Toshiba CD which got stolen. If I could get online with my own laptop (I'm using my buddy's, I'd try for an online virus scan cause I think this is a major virus!!)
