I recently downloaded a program and installed it and ran it, but did nothing in it. i selected the option to go back to the desktop and it restarted my computer. When my computer restarted all the screen gave me was my background and when i went into task manager explorer.exe was taking up 100% of my CPU. I tried ending the task and restarting, but it did the same thing. I've tried restarted the computer numerous times and sometimes the taskbar and a few desktop icons will show up, but then it freezes and explorer.exe goes back to taking up 100% of CPU. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do?

How does safe mode work? Perhaps you can go in there and uninstall that nasty program or use system restore.
Now when you try to end task explorer, how are you doing it? You should end it. Then choose file-> run in task manager and try to open it again by typing explorer.

safe mode wont even load. And I've tried reopening explorer and it shoots up to 100% again.

OK...I haven't given up yet, but this is my last thought. Go to task manager and end task on explorer. Then do file run and type this:

restore/rstrui.exe

That will open system restore. Hope you have some points set. Good luck otherwise. dark.

I just tried the system restore a few times, but it says that the system can not be restored. After windows shuts down the system restore pops up and starts to load, but it only ets halfway, then stops and restarts the computer and it says it can't be restored. :(

I'm having the same problem. I'm running Windows XP Home, I have disabled several services, removed several programs from the startup in msconfig and still the explorer.exe is eating up 100% of CPU resources. Anyone have any further ideas?
