Hi,

Recently i downloaded the latest update for DivX, this also installed google dektop toolbar with it. when i went to remove this from C:\Program Files i was unable to go to my control panel, so i restarted my computer, and now on every start up explorer does not appear even when i use new task in task manager.

i have scanned for viruses, spyware, etc.

internet explorer also does not work, so i am unable to check for windows updates.

please help,

Rob

If I'm reading things correctly, you removed directly from C:\Program Files rather than doing a proper uninstall from Add/Remove Programs. Use System Restore to go back prior to removing from Program Files or even prior to the DivX install. When you reinstall DivX, choose not to install the toolbar if you don't want it. If you can't get into System Restore from the desktop, start in Safe Mode with command prompt - at the prompt type
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
This will bring up the System Restore window.

Note: to enter Safe Mode options tap the F8 key during boot-up.

Thank you for your submition,

however when using system restore all atempts to restore back to prior dates are unsuccesful.

All i am told is that system restore is unsucceful on reboot, but i am not told why.

System Restore is corrupt also. You may need to repair system files. Start - Run - type sfc /scannow. If that doesn't help a repair installation of xp may be in order.

You will need the xp cd in both instances.

I have tried both with the windows CD and followed the correct path to repairing Windows from the given link.

again this did not work, all the "repair" has done is reset the resolution and the svchost.exe which makes up the border of programs does not funtion properly.

seeing as how i cannot access the control panel because explorer is not working i cannot change the resoloution.

Thankyou for your assistance LL, i have re-downlaoded google desktop toolbar and explorer was then able to launch, then removed google dektop toolbar via add / remove programs.

Kind Regards,
Rob.
