I was asked by Symantec "Live-up date" to update Norton Antivirus. Doing so, I now get an explorer.exe- Application error / Application failed to initalize properly (0xc0000006).. I cannot get passed the initial start-up because windows will not load. I get as far as a blank desktop... Need Help!!

Jaspro,

Try first the Last Known Good Configuration from Windows Advanced Options menu.
If that fails try a Windows Repair. starting the Computer with WinXP Home CD after making CD drive as the Fisrt Boot Device in the BIOS Setup and pressing a key on prompt to Boot from CD and then choosing the Windows Setup option by pressing ENTER and then after accepting License agreement with F8 when the Setup finds your WinXP Install and Prompts to press R to Repair doing so.

To start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature, follow these steps:
1. Start your computer.
2. When you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press the F8 key.
3. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
4. Use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER.

Jaspro,
Unfortunately, your Registry is so corrupt only a Repair Reinstall using WinXP CD or Restoring the system to factory settings using the Restore Disc from the System Manufacturer or Reformat and Fresh Install again requiring a Windows XP CD will be needed to solve your problem:-(
