Explorer stopped working

February 21, 2009 at 06:04:10
Specs: Windows XP
A day or two ago, windows explorer stopped working.
My computer runs XP Professional. The start bar and the desktop icons appear when I start the computer but flash a few times and then disappear. I've tried starting explorer through task manager and it just does the flashing thing again. I've also tried to reinstall the OS but there's a file missing on the disc so it stops halfway through. I can open programs through task manager, it's just explorer that doesn't work.

I've run several virus scans and it's come up with nothing - please help me, I have no idea what to do.

Have you tried running the utility the SFC(system file checker) ,it scans your system and replaces any missing originial O/S files ! To run the SFC you mus have the originial installation CD of the O/S your PC is now using ! To start the SFC >
Start/Run type SFC check the box "scan for altered files"
on settings check two boxes at bottom "check for changed files" & "Check for deleted files"
put check mark in " update verification information
Actually B/4 you run the SFC ,have you tried the system restore to a point B/4 I.E. stopped working ,if no then I would go ahead and try the system restore utility first ,its faster then SFC which takes 30 minutes-to 1 hour to run !
Good Luck Nick

System restore wouldn't let me pick a restoration date, probably since it hadn't been used until now. SFC did the same thing as explorer when I opened it, flashed a few times and then vanished :(
