I installed Norton Antivirus 2006 on my computer yesterday, and it changed all my shortcuts and .exe files to .lnk files. I've read all the past posts on this (as there have been many), and I've followed all the advice, but nothing's helped me!

* I've gone to DougKnox's webpage and used his fix-its, but even though I'm able to save the fix-its to my hard drive, I can't open them to unzip them.

* I can't get into safe mode through bootup, so I get to my command prompt by hitting Cntl-Alt-Del, File, Cntl-Run. I then type in %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe. It opens a BLANK System Restore Window.

* I've tried reinstalling Windows XP with the disc that came with my computer. My computer will open the main menu, but it does nothing when I click "Install Windows XP".

* I tried changing my .lnk files to the correct extention in Folder Options. (I can open Explorer.) It works for some files like my music files and some word programs, but most of my files it doesn't change.

HELP!!!

Another Post says
Kelly's fix worked! It didnt work in normal mode, so I switched to safe mode with command prompt and typed in "regedit -s "C:\path of the file\linkrestore.reg" and it worked.

I don't understand what I'm suppose to do.

I can't open http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/linkfilerestore.reg. I can save it, but I can't open it.

I can't open Start, Run ... so I go into my dos prompt and type in regedit -s. It opens my registry editor, but I don't know what I'm suppose to do from there. I don't know what "C:\somePath\myRegFile.reg" is suppose to mean. I don't know what "somepath" is suppose to be. Windows? I'm no expert, but I feel like I've worked on this so much, my brain has just turned off.

Thanks for your reply. Any extra help would be so helpful!

Did you try right click on it and select MERGE? That merges it into the registry.

Per, did I right click what and merge it into what? I right clicked the file that I downloaded, but I don't see a MERGE option. Maybe I'm not understanding ....

If you downloaded this file then you right click and select merge and it puts the key in your registry.

Per, this is so frustrating. My right click doesn't give me that option. The only options I see when I right click are:
Cut, Copy, Create Shortcut, Delete, Rename and Properties.

Okay ... my solution turned out to be easy. I never could get anything working for me. I knew I needed to get my windows xp repaired, but I couldn't get my F-keys to boot into any mode but normal. I CHANGED MY KEYBOARD TO ANOTHER KEYBOARD, and my F-keys worked! Ugh! Anyway, from there, I repaired my windows and all is good. Thanks for all the advice that was given. It was appreciated!

I just came accross this problem and let me tell you, it is a heck of a thing to fix. Here is how you do it though, it involves a little timing and a little luck.

1) Download and save this file to a floppy or CD http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/exefix.reg

2) Boot into XP and check if you have Outlook Express active on your start menu. Hopefully you have Outlook Express still listed there. If you don't, you are probably hooped.

3) Copy regedit.exe from your c:\windows\ directory to your c:\program files\outlook express\ folder

4) Here is the tricky part; you have to rename MSIMN.exe to MSIMN.OLD. Then rename REGEDIT.exe to MSIMN.exe -- on my system I the MSIMN.exe kept regenerating itself after being deleted or renamed so you have to be very quick about it. What I did was rename REGEDIT.exe to MSIMN.EX so I can just add and "E" at the end quickly before MSIMN.exe regenerates itself. WHEW!

5) Start Regedit from you start menu

6) change permissions on your HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT to allow "EVERYONE" Complete control

7) Import the reg file you saved to disk or cd

8) exit regedit and you should see all your icons re-appear.

9) delete msimn.exe from the outlook express folder and rename MSIMN.OLD ot MSIMN.exe

DONE!
