All my program "exe" files are missing. I have lost access to all other programs on my computer, after re-installing Windows XP on a different drive I have got back my Internet Access.

An "Access Denied" message shows up everytime I try to access programs from my original desktop, I'm confused here people what is my next step?

I was gonna back up all my files on CD, but it dawned on me that the exe files are gone so the CD burning tools won't work. Is there a way I can un-install the windows installation on the C drive, without accidently un-installing my new installation of Windows on the G drive...Do I HAVE to re-install all my programs again? Please ANYBODY respond, computing.net admins you are more than welcome to intervene here.

Confused, If you mean that trying to open any program by double clicking an .exe file doesn't work go to the link below, click on "Win XP Fixes", click on "File Association Fixes", click on "EXE File Association Fix" and download it. The instructions are on the page.

EXE File Association Fix

Tufenuf I appreciate your suggestion, but I have tried EXE File Association Fix already and it didn't solve the problem. Infact the Exe files are NOT even THERE, looks like they've ALL been deleted.

I've posted in the security & Virus forum yesterday, nothing has worked so far.

2 things you can try 1st start>run> type in sfc /scannow (notice the space between sfc and /, you will need to have the xp cd in the drive)>ok. If that doesn`t work, go into the bios force the comp to boot fron cd (with the xp cd in the drive) do an install you will be asked if you want to install or repair, hit install, at the second install or repair prompt hit repair, both ways sfc or repair from cd will repair your file system without losing data.

HTH, let us know how you get on

Confused, I'm sorry to say but I have to agree with Silver Surfer's Response Number 7 at the link below.

Your computer very well may have picked up a virus which wiped out all those program's .exe files.

Jim thanks for the tip to repair my Windows installation, I've tried it and must say, it did look like it was fixing something as it was taking some time to scan all my files using the XP CD in the drive.

To check if they work now, how do I go back to the old XP installation in Drive C. I'm currently using the new XP installation in Drive G and can't find a way to go back to my old desktop, the username has disappeared from the logon screen.

Thanx heaps buddy.

Access Denied? If you run winxp on NTFS, the system creates security discriptors, so I think You may have to know some passwords. have you ever tried to find out how to open "system volume information"? if you haven't then find that out. It will give you some ideas on how you might be able to view files on the other partition.
