Almost all my icons on my desktop changed to generic and I am unable to open executable programs because the .exe extention changed to .lnk, does anyone have a simple fix?

✔ Best Answer
The machine is infected. Start with anti malware from malwarebytes.org
Download , install, update & run it.

When you run an .exe file on a Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7-based computer, the file may start a different program

Copy & Paste the contents of the Malwarebytes ( MBAM ) log in your next reply please.

But malwarebytes is an exe file.

This should help:

You'll probably need to download the 'WINXP exe fix.reg ' file from the link there.

I don't see there where they tell you how to install a .reg file without using a registry editor, which again is going to be an exe file.

So, just download the .reg file from the link there and save it where you can find it. Then right click on it. The box that opens will have a Merge option. Click on that to install the fix.

If you're downloading from another computer, copy it to a flash drive or a removable media that both computers can use and then transfer it to the ailing computer.
