Excess CPU usage for some applications

December 19, 2009 at 22:41:50
Specs: Windows XP
Lately I have noticed that some applications have been taking up an overly excessive amount of CPU usage opposed to other applications. For example:

- When using Nero 9, NeroStartSmart.exe takes up around 30-40% of CPU usage.

- When using Java to play an online game, java.exe takes up around 50-60% of CPU usage.

- When using Sim City 3000, a Windows PC game, SC3.exe (the application for running the game) takes up around 50% CPU usage.

- Most Windows applications and Microsoft Office Home and Student apps i.e. Word, Powerpoint 2007 run efficiently.

- I have thoroughly scanned my system and the problem seems to be isolated to particular applications, so please don't tell me its a virus, spyware etc. and give me links for downloads of some random scanning software.

The result is a evidently laggy computer where it is actually difficult to run the applications which are taking up excessive CPU usage.

Related information:

- Lately I have been doing a few repair installs of Windows based on major dll and Net Framework related issues which I have resolved.

- I had to repair my system due to an SID (Security Identifier) - not so important.

- I know my stuff, but I am only a kid so explain it step by step so I do completely understand!

Thx 4Ever :)

That's not a bad config. Possibly you are just unlucky with the software you are running.

Java is crap software, which is know to have uncontrollable and unnecessary memory and CPU usage. Best advise : avoid using Java, use decent software.

Then, CD burners tend to take lots of CPU, ... but only when writing a disc. Apart from that, should be OK.

If your system is also laggy when NOT running these, take a look at this stuff :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proces...

Maybe you have a disk I/O issue (disks are slow already, and if you have a technical issue there ...). Do you hear the disk rattle constantly ?

Find out WHAT process is really taking a lot. Any process can take lots of CPU, it's only a problem if it remains to do it, for quite some time.

So, WHAT process is taking too much, there may be something running, constantly taking 20%, while it should take an average of 0.2% ... and these things add up.

If none other is found, than a crap Java processes, you may need to wait either:
- until Java gets its performance issues solved
- until you buy a quadruple (or more) CPU, and let that Java process occupy one full CPU ... enough left

The second is much more likely to solve any current (and future) Java problem, since crap software usually tends to be crap forever. Only solution then comes from hardware, which does improve. It's overkill, but it IS a solution.

"When using Nero

I don't know about dual core cpu's , but this doesn't sound excessive.

"- When using Java to play an online game, java.exe takes up around 50-60% of CPU usage.

- When using Sim City 3000, a Windows PC game, SC3.exe (the application for running the game) takes up around 50% CPU usage."

Games rely more on your graphics card, what one do you have?

Ok NeroStartSmart.exe seems to be back to normal (maybe just a one-off). Still having constant problems with Java and games.

My graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 2400.
