im not sure about the exact ram & stuff because im not on my compy..it's broken :(
my brother plays many video games on our dell computer. lately it has been acting weird, it is only 3 years old. the compy would restart but then go to a plain black sceen with the mouse. I reformated the drives and reinstalled windows. this was the 2nd time i did this, i figured it would fix all promlems, but it didnt. the computer only has 600x800 screen resolution now. i can no longer change it..the other options are no longer there? the compy is also registering there is no sound now. i don't know why this has happend? i can't turn the compy into standby mode either? i don't know what has happend but i would really like to know if anyone has any answers or help? please? thank you!

You're missing drivers. XP has drivers for lots of devices - but not all. You need driver for your graphics card, and one for your soundcard (and one for the motherboard would probably be a good idea too). If you don't know the make/model of these items, download something like belarc advisor or sisoft sandra to find out. The sound & graphics may be 'onboard' (ie, built into motherboard), in which case all the drivers should be on the motherboard manufacturer's site.

do these drivers cost a lot? where would i find a belarc advisor or sisoft sandra? and i have to be on the broken compy right?

If you do not have a dell driver disc, just download EVEREST Home Edition and it'll tell you what hardware you've got.
On the other hand, if you've got a driver disc from Dell, run the disc and install the required hardware drivers or simply tell the model of your Dell PC and we can better advise you.

Or, just go to Dell's website and download the drivers for your machine there. Drivers do not cost anything.

thank you. i have a Dell Dimension 2300. i put in the dedll drivers cd i have and i couldn't figure it out. nothing happened and nothing came up on the screen when i put it in, so i wasn't sure what else to do for that. i checked out the dell website for the drivers. there were so many though. i don't know which ones to download. i looked at the audio ones for the speaker problem, there was only one driver so i will dl that one. then i looked at the video ones for the graphics. there was 7 of those though so i dont know which one i need to fix the screen resolution. and then i wasn't sure which ones to look at for the motherboard problem? i will be going home tomorrow to hopefully fix the computer, so i really appreciate all this help! :o)

Rightclick on your CD drive and click autoplay or open the disc and double-click on the autorun file.
That should run the disc and you can then follow the menu to complete the driver installation.

Changing Resolution-
1.In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Settings tab.
2.Click the Advanced button.
3.Click the Adapter tab, and then click the List all modes button.
4.Select the resolution, color depth, and refresh rate that you want and click OK.

Don't rely too much on Belarc & Everest - they only tell you what drivers are installed & they may not be the correct ones. You're only sure-fire method is to check with the manufacturer or physically look at model numbers on the components in the box then search for drivers using Google.

on the changing resolution. i can not do what you just typed. there are no other options. i already tried. it is stuck in the 600x800 and i dont know why. i used to have it on 1024x768 and i dont know what happened. when i reinstalled everything, i lost everything like that and the sound??

The link above is Dell's driver download site for the Dimension 2300.
Hope this might help a bit; good luck!

You must be new to these things, otherwise you'd realize that if you reformat your system and reload windows you have to reinstall your drivers back to have your hardware working again.

yes. i am pretty new to some of this stuff. i couldnt understand the driver cd last time i tried but someone earlier told me how to use it. so i will try all of this tomorrow when i go home and see if it works. thank you!

I think it is Belarc & Sysoft that are liable to report what drivers are on your system, rather then your actual hardware.
As far as I know Everest (and Aida32) do indicate what hardware exists rather than the drivers that happen to be installed.
That is the very reason I use Everest rather than Belarc or Sysoft.
