by formatting the drive and re-installing the OS

sure you can manually uninstall software via add/remove programs, delete user accounts, files and settings, etc. ... but don't expect this method to be very accurate.

just a questuion for ya: do you really think that's a solution? i mean, reading all this, following the step by step instructions ... how long does it take? one hour? two, maybe more? and sure as hell there are traces of the rubbish left behind :-)

now, installing XP on on a modern computer takes how long? 20 minutes ish, plus installing the drivers. as a result you have your computer thoroughly decrapified :-)

Yeah it really doesn't purify the PC of all the craps but the thing is the OP never have stated he got XP CD to clean install XP on his OEM HP. BTW I don't need to follow that article.
