Hey chaps, just a quick question with regards to my internet.
Recently i restored my pc and i consider myself as being an 'advanced user'so i dont think the problem is down to an 'error' as such on my part. Anyway, basically everything including MSN Messenger, STEAM, google earth etc will connect to the internet when i FIRST turn on my pc, however when i open Internet Explorer i get the 'Page cannot be found, microsoft are incompetant' page. Do we know why the internet would selectivly work with certain programs AT FIRST and then suddenly, BAM, everythings connected?Anyway, its a great anoyance and i waited 15-20 mins before i could get onto this page. Thanks in advance,
Daniel

What is "earth etc"?
What is "STEAM"?Are either freeware scum programs?
Are either bandwidwith stealing programs? Are you sharing your internet connection with others to download freebies?
I'm just asking because I don't know and it it has the earmarks.

Hey Randy,
Google earth has been around about a year now, Steam is an online gaming platform by which Half Life 2 and Counter strike are played.
AMD Athlonxp 3200+ OC
Asus A7N8x-deluxe-E
ATI AIW 9600pro
2x WD SATA raptors/raid0
Corsair XMS3200
16x Lite-on DVD
12x DVD-R
48x Lite-on CDRW
Aspire Super Alien Case

'Page cannot be found, microsoft are incompetant' page.
Does not sound like any normal message.Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File
Also down that page is another method, rather than doing
the HOSTS file, of disabling or stopping the
"DNS Client" Service (if you are the only user,
and not part of a domain).
Services restart with every boot, so uncheck the DNS
Client service on the Services tab in msconfig.
Then again, you cannot restart the service via
services.mmc, but go back into msconfig.

Well, ive just quickly 'shutdown' zonealarm because the net went again and lone behold IE loaded my homepage straight away. My only concern is that even before i installed zonealarm, my net connection had similar problems.
Im pretty confident i dont have a virus because im not computer illiterate.
Something else is that im running on a wireless network, the Belkin 802.11g i think it is. The router and network card that is. But this shouldn't mean i can only access content in certain programs surely.

maybe not a virus per say, but some spyware/malware that's messing with IE. For example it changed it so that everytime you type an address it automatically takes you to a certain page, no matter what the url is. If that certain page is offline you get the 404 error.
I've had this happen with certain spyware/malware but it was such a long time ago that I forgot the fix or the name. Although some AV programs check for spy/malware most do not have the ability to remove/fix all of them, hell even spyware apps (adaware, spybot S&D) don't. You'll end up having to use more than one to clean your system out.
If it's not a spyware problems maybe IE got corrupted in which case you would have to reinstall it, it's a rare problem but it does happen. Search the forum on how to reinstall IE.
Truth can become lie, but if lies become truth we're in trouble.
