Hi everyone,
I'm in trouble... I have lost my sounds like .. Startup, Shutdown, Messenger Sounds...Re-Cycle bin....etc...

I have checked control panel and they test OK and can be heard there.

I have checked Device manager and DirectX and all ok.

Sound works in media player and Microphone...so conclude sound-card OK

Please.... any ideas... JIM..

You call that trouble. LOL Isn't your environment just a bit nicer without those goofy silly sounds.

If a user needs a silly noise to notify him or her that the computer has finally booted to the desktop, or is shutting down that user is in sentiential trouble and needs more help then, where did the beeps and toots go. LOL redux

But if you really need those noises go to Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds tab and select a scheme from the Sound schemes drop down list. Ok etc.

It sounds like your Ntuser.dat file is corrupt. If you have a backup of it, log on as a different user and then copy to your account. If you don't have a backup of your Ntuser.dat file then read Microsoft article "Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 811151"

Hey OPS I know what you mean... but it's a hassle when you don't have it ... even the "Drunk Tom-Tom" player in Messenger sounds good...lol

Well,
Here is the update....

No luck at all but tracked it to a bad install and uninstall od Ulead DVD PictureShow 2

Had a two week old Ghost Image to restore back to ... so took the cowards way out and did it.

Then took 5 hours to reload programs I had previously loaded in that 2 weeks....as I was reloading after a previous reformat:'(

Now everything is spot on...

Lesson:- Don't let Ghost Images get that long between backups..(My usual routine is every week) AND do a Ghost before any risky software install.

You would think this problem would have an easy FIX but I searched and found plenty of people with same problem but no fix for any ..

Thanks for having a shot ... JIM
