Other than the fact that that's go to be the most annoying ad-filled site ever constructed...

www.espn.com actually forwards to http://msn.espn.go.com. Can you go there directly? Perhaps the redirection isn't working for you.

If you can't, what happens when you try? Get any error messages, or just the standard "Page cannot be displayed" page?

Hi Dr. Mick:

It redirects fine to http://msn.espn.go.com. I see it in the address bar. But it just keeps trying to load and will not finish. The progress bar just goes really slow and doesn't load anything. The page remains blank the whole time. Thanks.

Also, I have Spybot. Would that be blocking it somehow? Though, the program doesn't have the option to allow certain sites.

Hmmm, well the first thing that comes to mind is the fact that the page is filled, and when I say filled, I mean FILLED with ads, and other media that use just about everything from flash to iframes to Java etc.

Have you checked your IE settings to make sure none of these special "features" is disabled? That'd be the first thing I'd check.

What happens if you let the page continue trying to load until it does something? If IE really can't connect to the page it should time out eventually, or maybe come up with some other error. Try just letting it sit for a good 10 minutes, unless you have and it hasn't done anything.

All features should be enabled. I am able to load any site I visit, except ESPN.com. Is that a particular site that you have in mind that might determine if it is a setting issue? ESPN.com just loads but doesn't finish. The progress bar stays at about 40%. It will eventually timeout. But it takes well beyond 10 mins.

Also, I have Spybot. Would that be blocking it somehow? The problem is there is no option to allow site access, if Spybot is the problem.

I doubt Spybot would do that, but you might try disabling it's realtime options. Don't have it installed on my machine right now, but I remember some settings that allow it to monitor your computer and help prevent spyware from installing itself.

Try shutting that off and then try the page again. If it still doesn't load, try pinging the site from a command prompt (Start > Run > 'cmd' > 'ping msn.espn.go.com'). I don't get a reply, but I do get the IP of 199.181.132.150. Is that what you get?

Nope, it's not Spybot. Disabled the realtime options and still couldn't load ESPN.com.

I tried pinging msn.espn.go.com and got "request timed out". But the IP was 199.181.132.140. Then I tried pinging that and it also timed out. Did the same and with 199.181.132.150 and it timed out as well. I tried loading 199.181.132.150 on IE and it does the same. It keeps trying to load and doesn't finish.

Also, what is your connection speed? If you're on dialup, that could explain a lot, considering how much stuff you have to download for the site. My 2mb cable connection loads THAT site a little slowly.

You may also try upgrading flash and java, and getting SP1 installed for both windows and IE (if it's not already).

I have ADSL. My speed is at 1300/325 via Covad. I should have the latest version of both java (1.4.2_01) and flash (7.0.14.0). I can load the lite version without a problem. I didn't know they had this version. It's just kind of annoying not being able to go on the regular site. But if it can't be solved, I guess the lite version is fine.

How I came up with the lite version you never would have found it since you cannot load the regular version to access the link to the lite version.
What I mean is..once the regular page loads..there is a tiny link at the bottom of page...something to the effect of "for those having problems viewing or loading this page click on this link" Quite useless link if a person can't load the page in the first place....
I was just reading the privacy policy in the help section on the bottom of the page...some of the features and services supposedly wont work right if you dont accept cookies from them, also they use web beacons and 3rd party cookies and web beacons...
If you use privacy software such as zone alarm's cookie control, ad blocking, and mobile code control...you might be hindering complete access to the site.
Try turning off any privacy features or setting up that site to allow all cookies, web beacons, etc.
In IE you can override the way it handles cookies for that site (or any other you choose)
You should be able to do the same with any other privacy software you might have.
