I am trying to re-install XP home edition. I have formatted the hard drive and am booting from the XP installation CD. The installation, in most cases, starts loading files then I get an error. I have tried several times, but I just keep getting error messages:

The file serial.sys is corrupted.

File \i386\biosinfo.inf could not be loaded. The error is code 2.

File ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. The error code is 18.

These were the last three error messages I got, I probably got 4 about a half dozen before this, all different, which I did not write down.

When I boot using the setup boot disks I don't get the errors but I can't install because this is a laptop so I don't have floppy/cd in at the same time.

Jay, SWAG, sounds to me like you're fighting one of a couple of ills. Either your machine is looking for not installed files on your HDD rather than CD (did you select the install WITH disk support option?) or you are fighting a corrupted (scratched?) CD.

Make a couple backup XP cds and tried these but had the same results. Took my CD/DVD-ROM drive apart and cleaned it up and this made it work a little better. I got a lot further into the install this time but still got an error near the end. Tried one of the backups cds I made with the newly cleaned drive and was able to get XP installed. Looks like it was a dirty lens.
