I have recently tried to install Windows XP Home edition on my PC. Throughout the initial text setup phase I recieved errors when transfering files from the CD-ROM to my HD. I tried the setup several times but recieved the same errors often with the same filename appearing unable to copy to my HD.
Eventually I have was able to get XP installed but will not be suprise if it doesn't run well. It is clearly missing the lunar style taskbar (because luna.mst didn't copy correctly) and god knows what else.
I turned to Windows XP after failing to install Windows 2000 Pro after receiving similar file copying errors. I think it may be my hardware causing these installation prolems. If anyone has any ideas as to why please let me know as I'd like to do a clean error free install. Here are my system details.
1G Duron processor
ASUS A7V133-C motherboard
40G Seagate HDD
256MB SDRAM
SAMSUNG CD-ROM
SAMSUNG DVD/CD-RW COMBO Drive.NB: Errors occur when installing from both CD drives.

It may be your cd-rom.
I have a samsung 52X cd-rom and same s---. So i used my lite-on cd-rw and guess what perfect installation. The samsung 52X sometimes has random slow downs which usually mess up reading the cd. It normally isnt a problem but on critical things as xp installation it may be a big problem.

I ran the repair option and thats how I finally got the desktop to load. However, I still had file copy errors occur during the repair installation option.
It must have repaired it enough but I'm still not confident with the install. Thanks for the tip Roman. I think the Samsung drives could be at fault. It is a 52X. This would explain the same errors on the Window2000 attempt. I'll have to try another CD drive :(
