error when installing xp

hey all i have a problem with my comp amd 2000 with 256 ram 20 gig hard drive i went to put a 40 gig in it it sez not enough mem to continue i hit enter it starts to setup windows when it gets to 4 percent i think it stops when installing drivers.?? <<i forget what it is by the way im working on someone elses comp but anyway it reboots and wont go ne further my email is jnjritz@hotmail.com can i put a stick of my mem in to install then take out??

Yes, you can install another for the install. Keep in mind that XP may not like the stick that's in there now. That is the usual problem with a fresh install.

thank you c the problem with it and y i wanna upgrade to 40 gig is when i hooked up at home internet worked fine (cable) i took over to her house and hooked up and it didnt work it sez something about not connected and the ip address it wont find it it works on her old comp but not new one tryed just about everything even xpwinsox fix didnt work but thank you for answering this prob

Did you try start-run-type CMD ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew.

yes i did it would reset to all 0's but when i renewed it. it would hang then tell me it timed out.i never ran into this problem . its driving me nutz lol

i just dont wanna reinstall windows and she dont have to money to buy memory and a hard drive if it has a bad sector

Try removing all the pci devices except the graphics card and do the install then replace them one at a time.

Only thing I can suggest is try another memory stick or possibly another cd drive.

hey i tryed everything reinstalling windows over n over didnt work i tryed different modems (diff brands) i hooked up a linksys routor and boom it work i thank you for helping i hope this helps
