When installing Windows XP home edition on a PC which had its C drive recently formatted I get the following error:
"Setup cannot copy the file: webfldrs.msi" (the name of the file is different on successive attempts at installing)The steps leading to the error are as follows:
1. Booted using the xp cd.
2. Pressed enter to start the xp setup.
3. It asks to insert a previous windows version, so I inserted my Windows 98 SE cd.
4. Chose Partition2 [NTFS] on the partition select screen.
5. Chose "Leave the current file system intact (no changes)" on the following menu.
6. Reinserted the xp cd, pressed enter.
7. At the "setup is copying files..." screen, I get the error at about 10%. If I press enter to retry, nothing happens. If I press ESC, I get the same error message but with a different file: "Setup cannot copy the file: msimsg.dll" Each time I hit ESC, a different file name appears in the error. I've checked the xp cd on another PC and those files do exist with the last character replaced by an underscore such as webfldrs.ms_ and msimsg.dl_
Please help.HP Pavilion 7966

80 GB Ultra DMA hard drive
32 MB nVidia TNT2 M64 graphics

No operating system is functional now since the drive was recently formatted and the xp setup process was incomplete due to skipping of too many files.

I know it's illegal to copy the Windows XP CD but if you make a copy and swap out the disc with the copy or original each time you get an error, it will copy the needed files. The same thing happened to me so I just made a copy and each time it gave me an error I just popped in the other cd.

Could be as simple as a bad stick of ram. XP setup is very, very picky about memory errors. Go to www.teresaudio.com and get memtest86. It will tell you if it is a memory problem. When I had this problem, MS Tech Support told me it was a bad CD. When I had the same problem on the second CD, someone on this forum said that it was most likely bad memory. Guess who was right.

File copy errors on an install, particularly on a clean install usually point to a miscommunication between the Cd-Rom and harddrive. You need to copy the i386 folder to the harddrive. Use a Win98 or WinME bootdisk with smartdrive and xcopy. Just copy will work, takes a lot longer, though. Then start the install from DOS with the winnt.exe file inside.
Good Luck
