error: remove media or disk

Specs: Windows XP
Running Windows XP home edition.

No disk, no CD, removed external HD--reseated all cables. System will not start up. Continue to get error stating "remove media or disk. Press any key to restart"
Suggestions?

Is there a USB-Stick plugged, that might be recognized as a harddrive?

You have to start your PC with a DOS boot disk and use fdisk to check that.
