Just purchased Win XP home upgrade, upgrading from win98.
First problem is that I keep getting the message "error reading from CD - enter to retry, F3 to quit." This happens on a lot of the files, but not consistantly the same ones.
The files usually get copied after a few retries, but often I have to skip the file.
Once the installation is passed this stage, the computer reboots and either immediatly crashes on the first screen of the blue setup screen, or I get a screen displaying the message "system error and then terminates my system, forcing me to do a hard reset.
Has anyone get any ideas?
thanks,

I'd take the disk back th where you bought it, as it sounds like a faulty disk. As you've just bought it, you'd be really unlucky if you've scratched it already, or put fingerprints on it, but that's what it sounds like. Presumably you've checked the surface of the CD. If it's nothing you've done, it's probably a manufacturing defect. If you're sure this isn't the case, maybe you're CD drive is having problems? I'd try installing it onto another machine, or on the same one via a different CD drive if possible. If it does the same on different hardware, then you're disk is at fault.

I had the same problem, in the end it turns out that it was a memory defect. Another memory module PC2100 from a different manufacture, and everthing works perfectly.
