When i start up my computer it tells me: Missing operating system i messed around with some fdisk stuff and i am now getting that response, can anyone help me?

LOL you need to reinstall the OS! why did you mess around with FDISK, this has either partitioned your drive OR erased a partition! You need to run FDISK again and make sure you have an active partition, then format and install your OS again!
That'll teach ya! LOL
Matt

ok, WAIT! how would i be able to format my os?! i would really like to know that, when i boot up with the windows 98 boot disk, i get into the dos prompt and get: a:\ right, then i type c: ya know, to change to that main directory, well then it tells me that c:\ is like invalid type media. I know i didn't get rid of my os, because the process happened almost in a second...please help

Do you have a win98 boot disk?
At the A: prompt type fdisk and check out what you have then post back and we'll see what you can do!Matt

OK, um, yes i'm kinda new at this stuff with fdisk, which kinda stuff do you want me to post back with?

Type
fdisk /status
If it works it should tell you what partitions you have on the drive.
If it can't access the drive, I suggest you go to the hard drive manufacturers web site and download a diagnostic.

when you run the fdisk, select I think option 3 or 4 - the one that gives you info on your partition! and see if you have an active partition! if you do it will tell what is partitioned, if you don't it will say no activ epartition!
Matt

fdisk /status gave me:
Disk Drv Free Usage
1 2445 100%
C: 2445
2 14324
D: 2047 100%
something like that, i don't think i got all the rows correct...but there it is:(

When i went to 4, on fdisk, to see the disk displayed it gave me:
Partition Status Type
C: 1 A Primary dosSystem usage
Unknown 100%

Ok it seems that your partition is ok! BUT you are going to have to format and reinstall! sorry!
Do you need to kow how to do this or are you ok?
just let us know!
Matt

NOOO! how do you format! i would really like to know that! i don't! please help! format c: command does not work!:(

ok, thats all i think i can do for right now, because when i type: format c: it says bad command or file name:( i will just try reinstalling right off the bat, it will probably fix it if i do that right ????

nope, same error through a: :(, ummmm soo just a full reinstall will work? booting from the winxp cd?

If you would prefer to save everything, I would try an 'upgrade' if you don't care about saving anything do a full.

ok, i will have to try this tommorow, if i have any more problems i will come straight back to this thread;) probably in the next 17 to 18 hours i'll try reinstalling, and if that does not work then...whooo...i will be very confused and mad

WAIT! one more thing, if my comp isn't even recognizeing my hd's, i mean, i guess it is, but i can't dir them, or look through my directories, YET when i start up it will show them in the bios! so will a reinstall really work??? what if it does not detect the harddrives? maybe not, i don't know:(

You can delete your partition with a single click in fdisk.
Insert the Xp disk, restart and see what happens.
If setup asks you to install on unpartitioned space then you have removed your OS.
Post back with what you find during setup before going any further. Someone might be able to offer better/specific instructions for salvaging or replacing XP.

ALlright, well i just formatted both, hell with it:( i learned the hard way, btw is it better to put the os on the C drive or the D drive? or does that even make a difference??

Ok, i just got done formatting drive d, now when i try to select drive d to be the drive with the operating system, it says that there is already an operating system on that partition and that it is not recommended to do this, wtf?! i just formatted, isn't there NOTHING on that hard drive right after a format?!
