OS: XP PRO
CPU/Ram: p4 2.2/512

C:\DOCUME~1\Susie\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERD.tmp.dir00\appompat.txt

I have a Dell Dimension 8200, 512 ram, 2.2 p4 processor, 80gighd(only 30% used) XP PRO it is about 1 1/2 years old. The only utility I am running is Norton Anti Virus which is on all the time and it auto updates and also auto update for MS.

I am getting a low virtual minimum memory error message. I have 512of ram and it was 1500 to 2000. I felt that should be more than enough. But according to the error notices it is not. So I increased it to 2000 to 2500. Now that is 5 times the mbs of ram. It shouldf work.

I have not gotten those error messages since I changed because now I am using ctrl alt del to close out of frozen programs. So even with the increased memory it is still not fixing the problem.

Programs freeze up. The start menu is extremely slow in opening up along with everything else. When I open msword, the window opens about an inch at a time, it opens in increments.

I have used search to find the location indicated on the error messages. But I have no luck. I do not have a folder called documents with susie/locals, etc. I have also done a search for accompat.txt and iexplore.exe.mdmp.

I would appreciate any help. I need to be given a path to the files if there is something I need to do with them.

Thank you so very much. Susie ps. feel free to email if you would like SusieQoooo@aol.com

You DO have a folder like the one it points to, If you have Xp installed on your C drive, the path would be...........

C:\Documents And Settings\Susie\Local Settings\Temp

That is if your username is Susie.

You need to open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and find out which processes are munching your memory, post back with the major offenders.

PS. Soz, forgot, you need to have "Show hidden files and folders" enabled to see the folder in question.

Through bitter recent experience, the appcompat file is, one, very difficult to remove and if you can, it comes right back. I suspect the other one is similar. It's a mini-dump file. You may or may not find it in Hooner's path, or you may find it in windows temp files, or you may not find it at all. Trust me. You can also not remove them from the command prompt. And so what? Even if you do, they'll come right back.

My problem began when I upgraded McAfee Security Center to V.8. I received the same messages you are, and was unable to open Windows Explorer, IE, My Computer, Search engine, Control panel, and maybe one or two others.

After agonizing sessions with McAfee, I was told to disable the Privacy Center in V.8 and all was well. So I have paid for four things in the security center and have only two. (The other is spamkiller which never did install.) They admitted they have a problem with this version. Their forums are full of messages from those with same problem.

This doesn't help you, except that it may be related to Norton as well.

McAfee told me I must have left a trace of V.7.02 in the computer somewhere. You have to uninstall the previous version before you can upgrade to V.8. Add/remove doesn't totally uninstall, and removing everything from the paths and icons doesn't do it either.

They sent me instructions on what to remove from the registry. That didn't help.

So, the bottom line is that you have something that is incompatible with something else, probably a Norton update or upgrade. You may be in for a long haul.

I suspect your large ram usage may be a different problem. At least that didn't happen to me.

Damn glad I read your post above. I came very close to getting McAfee Security Center V.8 last week.

For once, my habit of procrastination was good for something. 8-)

I don't think setting your pagefile to five times your ram will help and will not recommend it either. Three times is microsofts recommendation.

With XP less is more
is the pagefile's rule of thumb.

The less RAM you have the more likely XP will use the pagefile hence XP's default pagefile settings.

Apply the "no pagefile setting" first, reboot and set it on "system managed size".

Run a disk cleanup, delete normal.dot and like Hooner suggested take another look @ your simulteanously running processes.

Hi, Hooner,

Well after doing that I was able to find appompat and deleted it in the t wo WER files but cound not find the mini dump one.

Also wondering since it is ie .exe in there would that be safe to do so?

REGARDING WHAT TAKES UP MOST OF MEMORY
I try to run pretty lean because I use some graphic programs. But I am having this trouble and not even using them.

The only thing in the background is Norton Anit Virus, and windows messenger that came up and I do not know how to remove it(but would like to know how), and it still shows on task bar but I do not sign in. My scanner and printer are turned off unless I am going to use them.

In order to deal with this problem, I pretty much try to have only one program running at a time.

Everything was shut down when ms word was opening so slowly. When the start was slow, there was nothing going.

However, in doing ctrl alt del in aol i notice that the graph sometimes goes up to 100% usage.

But when it is shut off it shows less than 3%.

This seems to be happening to all.

I have aol on because I had bookmarked this site on aol, but I suspect it would be the same if I was using ie.

Here are the ones at this time that are taking up the most.

**all that is running now is aol** other than norton anti virus.
waol.exe 11,760K
explorer.exe 13,884k
SVCHOST.EXE 9,636K

The rest are under 4000K

Thank you in advance for your help.. hope this helps

LOL..this sounds like a Dr. Seuss, puzzle.

You were right the mini dump was in W Temp. but the folder was empty.

NORTON/CONFLICT
funny you should mention about McAfee, which I had in the past and did not like and found their support did nothing to help.

I did install norton firewall a few months ago, and when I first booted up after installation, I heard a light clunk clunk from hd area. I felt it had some effect on my entire system. So I finally uninstalled the firewall and just kept anti virus.

I uninstall with the programs uninstall then use search and see if there are any fragments left that would not effect the rest of the system and delete them.

My computer still makes the clunk clunk sound when it loads norton anitvirus that started with norton firewall. But since that has been going on, everything was ok, not great, but ok, until this past week, it has become unworkable.

LONG HAUL...lol... well, most times I have found if there seems to be a quick and/or cheap fix it does not help for very long..lol

I thought that is why I bought a computer, so I could spend most of my waking hours fixing it..lol

Thank you. Susie

I agree, but I was following trouble shooter and it said to increase, and was concerned that it was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay high. Will go back to system manage after your instructions.

Glad my long rambling post was good for something. They claim they're going to fix it. We'll see.
