Comment:

Recently set up a new computer with Windows XP installed. After installing the programs my friend wanted the following message is always displayed at startup.

"Resident
06:24 Registry change denied
Identified as User blacklist
Resident denied the change of IE 3.0 RegSvr
schannel.dll (category System Startup global entry)based on your black list."

Is there a way we can find what program is attempting to change the registry?
Thanks

Are you running IE 3.0?? If so, update it to the current version 6.0 or 7.0

This could be related to the schannel.dll mentioned in this article.

I am running IE6 and IE3 has never been on this computer. Over the past week I have done a ton of web searches and cannot find anything remotely akin to this problem.
Thanks

I guess I should also say this. I have scanned the drive with AVG, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D. I also ran Ccleaner and dumped everything it found.

My other suggestion would be to see if you get the error message when booting into safe mode. If all is well there, then boot normally and from run type in msconfig and see what is listed under the startup tab. Unchecking an item only disables it from running on startup and could aid in troubleshooting.

SysLock I think I have located the culprit. Here is what I found;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce\IE3.0 RegSvr channel.dll=

Looks like this thing wants to run one time. What do you advise?

Go ahead and remove the entry. It's possible when installing his applications, one may of been connected to IE 3.0 and hence the entry.

Thanks, I have removed that entry and on re-boot everything was back to normal.
Well. . . as normal as Windows can be.
