error message at startup desktop

Specs: Windows XP Professional SP2
a message comes at desktop when I on my computer:"windows can't run 16-bit program"..How can I remove that message?

Uninstall whatever you suspect to be the problem. Sounds like an old program was installed.
Or go into MSconfig, click the startup tab, and uncheck what you think it is from there. (It will still be installed on the computer, but it won't run at startup anymore. Therefore no more error message entering windows).
