I don't understand why this would happen. Where did you buy the copy? How do you know it is genuine? I am not accusing you of anything, but you may have gotten a pirated copy. Even then I don't understand why it would act as it is.
Did you also register the copy during the installation?
Right now I suggest you try booting into Windows safe mode (F8 at start up). Do you have another OS besides WinXP installed?
Had it been some time since you last rebooted your computer?
