Alright, I downloaded the Windows XP Home boot disks [all six of them] from Microsoft yesterday and was all set to install XP from DOS, or so I thought. Right before the actual installation occurs [after all the houpla of checking for a previous version of windows and what not], and directly after the setup checks my drives I am given the following error:

"The following value in the .SIF file used by setup is corrupted or missing:

Value 0 on the line in section [SourceDisksFiles] with key 'SP1.cab.'

Setup cannot continue. To quit setup press F3"

I have no idea what this means, or what could be causing it. It has happened three times in a row. Any help you could provide me is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

.Adam

First, you are not really using DOS with XP, if you are...then thats a new one. You first need to re-create the floppy disks from mircosoft (only used if you can not boot from CD) and get your XP cd out (YOU MUST HAVE CD AND PRODUCT KEY) and ready to go.

Also if you are trying to "upgrade" from '98, don't waste your time. Do yourself a HUGE favor and do a spankin fresh install of XP. New partition and everything. Wipe your hard drive clean and start out brand new. You "can" do an upgrade, but you are just creating headache after headache if you do. Ya, I know a lot of people that do the "upgrade" method....good for them. Its a nice gamble at best.

good luck

Go to bootdisk.com and download their XP custom install disk. It talks you through installing from the A: drive. It is a free download and you wont need the 6 disks.

I was told that I couldn't install XP in DOS. I ended up using a boot disk for Win98SE and then chose to start the computer with CD Rom support. Also if you can get to boot options change it to boot off the CD.

Worked for me :o)

OK, as Zat said, boot with 98-boot disk with CD-Rom support, insert the XP CD, change to i386, type winnt and hit enter. Now Setup will install XP from DOS. Note: The hard drive must be formatted FAT32 und before you start, you should run smartdrv.exe, otherwise Setup will take several hours to copy the files to the hard drive before the XP installation can begin.

Cheers de Peter

I've got a similar problem. I've heard that a lot of other people have this, but I haven't been able to fix it. If I try and do a clean install, and boot from the cd, a blue screen comes up with 'windows setup' and it loads all of the things it needs to load, then it says 'SETUP IS STARTING WINDOWS' and nothing happens, for hours. What can i do? I've updated my BIOS, btw. I've got a 20gb FAT32 hdd, az11 FIC motherboard and NVIDIA Geforce 2 MMX graphics card.
