Error Message: Goback is unable to determine which of your hard drives is the boot disk. Goback can not be installed until this problem is resolved.

Here is the history of how the problem occurred.

It started after I tried to use goback because an update made my computer slow way down. I uninstalled the update as recommended in PCWorld and it seemed to be worse so I figured I could goback in time.

Goback then said it was corrupted and was going to uninstall itself. It uninstalled itself on my first drive but not my second drive. Then things got ugly.

The first error came up that program was unable to communicate with goback device driver.

I tried a few times and figured I needed to reinstall goback so I tried that. I first had to uninstall goback but after I received the message do I want to uninstall my copy of goback and said yes, I then received another error saying you have already selected a command for goback to perform on its next start.

I restarted a few times but each time I tried to uninstall goback it said it had a command already selected to do and whenever I tried to run it I received the communication error.

Could not disable goback either , received the same communications error.

I removed goback from the start-up menu in msconfig hoping it would release it and allow me to uninstall it and then rebooted. That didn’t work either.

I then found a message on Microsoft’s website that said how to remove goback from my computer by going into the registry. I removed all mentions of Goback, GBMenu, GB Revert, GBDrive, GBFile.

This then left me another error message when I tried to reinstall. Goback is unable to determine which of your hard drives is the boot disk. Goback can not be installed until this problem is resolved. I read the website and it said it was because GOBack would not work with dynamic drives only basic drives. I went to computer management and have Disk 0 as basic and Disk 1 as basic. These are the 2 hard drives I have. Neither of my drives are dynamic and I have been running goback in this computer for about a year.
On the website I found a page that said this error was from my drives being dynamic and they aren’t. I looked in disk management and they are both assigned as basic drives.

In talking with the Symantec and Dell, their only solution was to reformat the drives and start over. I also asked PCWORLD Answer Line and he had a few suggestions but none of them resolved the issue either, although he was nice enough to work with me on it.

I have updated my BIOS, tried FIXMBR, FIXBOOT, FDISK /mbr from a win98 start-up disk, changed my disk drive type from 44 to an 07 and screamed at my computer a lot.. I disconnected my second drive and removed it from BIOS to see if it could see just the one drive but I still have the same problem

My system is a dell 2.4G, 120G and 60G hard drives running XP.

Everything else seems to be working okay, I just can’t reinstall GoBack! Initially the 60G drive kept coming up with an error about missing a driver of some sort, don’t remember exact message but Microsoft had a fix for it by removing a value from the registry.

I have been using goback since “wildfire” and would very much like to get this problem resolved. I am running version 3.21 now which is compatible with XP.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Gene

Have you tried XP's system restore? It is the same thing as Go Back and I can see nothing but problems trying to run them both.
Xp by default(as well as Go Back) uses about 10% of your hard drive for their restore functions.
There are 2 things I would do if you are determend to use Go Back. First under system properties, turn off system restore.
Second, insert your XP disk and then go to Run and type in SFC /scannow. This will replenish all of your XP files back to install state.
If you want to try system restore it is in the path, start/programs/acc/system tools/system restore.

To remove the MBR entry made by GoBack you will need to boot your system from a Windows bootable floppy diskette in your floppy drive. Once the system is at the prompt you will need to type Fdisk /MBR to clear out the Master Boot Record and remove the GoBack entry that is residing there. If you are running Windows NT/2000/XP you may need to run the recovery console FIXMBR command after running the Fdisk /MBR command to reset the Master Boot Record with the Windows NT boot loader.
In short. When you performed fdisk/mbr with the 98 bootdisk you needed to then run FIXMBR with your XP CD to set up the NT bootloader again.
Hope this helps.

If that doesn't help. Here is a site jam packed with troubleshooting guides for GoBack.
Good Luck.
