I am unable to play cd rom and I dont have money to pay to have something installed and I just up the creek I just started classes and cant use the cds. ANYONE PLEASE OH YEAH I AM A LITTLE OR A LOT COMPUTER ILLERATE SO BE GENTLE.

Removing the Upper and/or Lower Filters may help. Make sure you remove the right key(s), here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314...
If the Filter key(s) do not exist then it is a different problem. If after removing the Upper and/or Lower Filters, the drive does not show up in Device Manager, restart the computer and check the POST screen during start-up or go into the BIOS set-up to see if the drive shows there. If it doesn't show in either, then the drive is probably defective and needs replacement.
