Hi

I have 750mhz P3 IBM laptop with 256mb pc100 memory. Today I bought additional 256mb of pc100 and I placed into the slot properly and I switched the laptop on and i then said after a beep:

error 0232 extended ram failed at offset 1a

Does this mean that the RAM is corrupted or incompatible?

Anyways, I removed the stick and left the original one and started again. It went to the windows XP Pro like normal, but then i check the system status from the control panel and it said it only has 128mb of RAM! Where the hell did the other 128mb go? It is 256mb ram stick ffs!

Please help.
Thanks

in regards to your memory

ibm systems are sometimes picky about the hardware you plugin sometimes they require parts that are specified as compatible

i have some ibm systems that wont take generic brand memory but only ibm compatible ram

did you check compatibility before you purchased the ram??

i havnt seen this on dell or any one else only ibm systems

sometimes their eide drives use the extra pins that regular eide dont...

small things like that to insure you buy thier parts....

Well, it was only £15 so i Might just buy IBMs memory.

Still the original IBM 256mb is showing as 128mb instead of 256mb like it used to be before i tried use the new one. can you please tell me how to solve this problem?

try switching slots to see if it jogs its memory
beyond that check within your bios to see if there are any clues

no clues try resetting the bios and see if that works...

I've tried BIOS coupla times before and ive tried changing the slots but the problem simply won't go away.

If I reset bios then do i need te reinstall windows?

no so long as the bios is configured properly everything will boot normaly

for instance if you have two hard drives you might need to specify wich one to boot off of etc

everything windows uses is on the hard drive not the bios
