I got a system that acts very strange upon boot. Once the desktop appears and everything is loaded, everything actually appears ok. The problem doesn't begin until you go to double-click an icon on the desktop. Once the double-click is done, the mouse appears to go into a serious double-clicking act. If you leave the mouse positioned over the icon that was clicked, it just keeps loading windows for that icon (say Internet Explorer). I've had as many as 40+ instances open up. Now, if I move the mouse to an empty desktop area and then click, it seems to stop its act. Once everything that was opened is closed windows behaves normally. I initially suspected the mouse, so I replaced with a new mouse. The problem still exists. I've run virus scans, spyware scans, checked the startup reg entries for any unusual. Everything appears ok. Not sure if this is related or not, but the LOGO+R key will not bring up the RUN dialog.

Any suggestions are greatly appreicated. I've been around computers for a long time and have never seen this problem. Any time that I ever had this type of behavior it was the mouse.

Just an FYI, if I unplug the mouse and load windows, everything appears fine. In other words, nothing strange happens. I've checked mouse settings and can find nothing that would cause the machine to behave in this fashion.

Thanks

pblake61, couple of thoughts come to mind. First is a trojan. Be aware that a virus and a trojan are similar, but not the same. Many times, a virus scanner can detect one it can't clean , other times, it gets missed entirely. There’s an online trojan scanner @:

If it turns out that you have one and need to clean, A² can do the job and you can get it free @:

among other places. If it turns out that you need to use it, be sure to update prior to running.
Next thought is driver. Possibly your mouse driver has become corrupted. Just to be sure, think I'd delete it and replace with a fresh copy. Sounds like you've pretty much eliminated all the other possibilities I can think of.
