As long as you have reasonably decent hardware, you should encounter few problems. WinXP is a great OS (choke--I'd always HATED M$ OSes until Win2K).

To completely erase your hard drive, you should delete all the partitions with FDISK, repartition, and format. Here's a link to a simple single-floppy bootdisk to do that: http://www.mirrors.org/archived_software/www.bootdisk.com/xpfiles/xpboot.exe.

you might wanna use FDISK for deleting your partition. and thats it. Setup program from your windows cd will guide you on the rest. very simple.

gee guys you didnt mention ,that she should check her hardware for compatibility, compaq
may have no xpdrivers for her and no bios updates, dont you think she should check this first before diving in with an oem
maybe she is running win95,

would you post the model of presario you have and check the compaq site for drivers for your machine and xp and if they provide bios update for you

I have a 5bw120 presario, win 98 se, and I am headed to the compaq site now. I do not have the Quick Restore disc to erase with, but now I understand that I should use the FDISK for a complete installation anyway. All of this scares me a bunch. Thanks for taking your time to respond to my question.

Sandy

you do have the 98 disc..right??
because if you format your HD and erase 98 what will you use as proof of qualifying product when XP asks??
