Hi, everyone.

I received an E-Mail recently with embedded pictures and music. I assume it's embedded because there is no file attachment shown.

The quality of the music is very good and it plays for just over three minutes. There are four animated pictures as well, but the complete file size is only 185 kbs. How is it possible to get so much on such a small file? I am not connected to the internet when playing it.

Also, is it possible to extract the music and save it to another folder?

If the Images were relatively small animated Gifs and if the Music is a Midi File then that would fit into 185 Kb

To get your Music File...

..open the Message and Press Forward - but don't Send! - you should see the Music File as an Attachment...

...with Right Mouse Button - Drag onto Desktop and Copy Here - close the message

Ted - sorry about misspelling your name!

PS - the above assumes you're using Outlook Express

That method is wrong!

I do know how to do it and have done it but I've forgotten!

Will try to remember - maybe someone else knows anyway

I think this is it...

Do as I first said ie press Forward but then - go to Format on the Menu Bar and Select Plain Text...

..then the File should appear in the Attchment Bar...

..you'll get a warning about the HTML Format but say ok anyway...

..then carry on as I said above ie Drag the File onto the Desktop - Copy Here - and then do as you wish with it

Hope that works!

Lesley

hope that works

Hi, Lesley.

Thank you for your explanation. I didn't realize Midi files were so small. Don't worry about the typo.

Your extraction method doesn't work wih me, but now I know that it can be done, I'll experiment. I see you can add music to the message by selecting "Background" in options, so maybe I can work out something from that.

Sorry it didn't work!

" I see you can add music to the message by selecting "Background" in options, so maybe I can work out something from that. "

Yes - that is how the originator embedded the Midi File but I don't think that is how you extract it

I have found my original instructions - can't remember where I got it...

" To save embedded files of all kinds, highlight the message header and click on Forward. When the Forward compose window pops up, select Format | Plain text. This will remove the HTML formatting, and the embedded files will be attached to the message in the attachment pane. "

I did do that once and it worked - I just Dragged the Attachment onto the Desktop but I've never had occasion to do it since

Hi Ted,

I have also been facing the similar problem of saving embedded images into their original form. I have found a solution just similar to how lesley has told.

Go to Outlook Express:Tools:Preferences:EMail Options...

and check the option 'Read all standard mail in plain text' close the mail message and reopen it. Now you will see the embedded objects as attachment and here you are...now you can easily save these attachments. The same thing should also work for embedded sound files.

P.S. May be the route to set the message in plain text is different in your outlook version. Just find out that. I am using outlook 2003.

Hope this works. BoL !!
