I have a problem with my e-mail disconnecting when I log off and then try to log on again. Iam running Windows XP home SP2 with Outlook express six. I get this error:
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.embarqmail.com', Server: 'pop.embarqmail.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E.The only way I know of to get my mail service back is to shut down the computer and restart. Any suggestions?

Per,
The web site you referred me to seems to deal with internet access problems. I can access the internet just fine after my re-logging in. It is my Outlook express connection I am having trouble with. Thanks.

For future reference, OE questions should be posted in the Office Software Forum...
Have you Googled that error?

are you on Dialup ISP ?
that is usually the nature of Dial up
but do you connect to the internet first?
if you do then their there should be no trouble logging in.ok lets do one step at a time.
start > network connection >
search for the dial up? Right click and send to Desktop >
Their you will have a icon to connect to the internet.in the outlook go to tools option > connection > put a check mark in the hang up after sending and reciveing.> Apply >Ok
do let us know more if it helped at all.
Have a Great Day ;-D

per,
Tried the web site you recommended in response #3 I couldn't figure out how to complete the test because I don't have a password to retrieve my mail. I tried all the passwords that I do have for windows XP and nothing worked. I even created a password and I kept getting a message that read:-ERR no domian specified or invalid domian specified.

Jennifer SUMN,
Response #4:Thanks for the heads up on the proper forum to ask questions for outlook express problems. This is my first time using My computing.net for posting any problem.

notsotechie,
Response #5: I have DSL. I have internet access and e-mail access when I first login to my computer. The problem starts when I logoff without shutting down the computer and re-login later. I still have internet access at that time when I re-login but I do not have e-mail access. I receive the error message I posted in the original message.

bats, welcome to the fold. Googling that specific error indicates an Exchange problem, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/191687
but since you're not running Exchange
take a look at the link provided in the MSKB article

I have checked all the links and performed all the tests. Some work, some don't. My conclusion is that every thing connects and works ok on the initial start up. Like I said in my original question, the problem is when I log off with out turning the computer off and then log back on, I have an internet connection but Outlook Express will not connect so that I can send or receive mail. I think when I log off, the connection to the ISP disconnects and then doesn't follow the same startup as a cold boot when logging back on. I can't find a way to kick start the connection protocal once logged back on to get the e-mail to connect. At all times, I remain connected to the internet.

What are the settings under Connections/Internet Connection Settings in OE?

Jennifer SUMN,
I opened Outlook Express, clicked on tools, went down to the bottom entry which is Options and clicked it. Then clicked on the Connection tab in the Options box.I did not have a check in the two boxes that pertain to dial-up connections. I clicked on the Change button that pertains to internet connection settings and there is nothing in the Dial-up and Virtual Network Settings box. Then I clicked on the LAN settings box and I found the only thing that is checked in that window is Automatically Detect Settings.
Is this the area you are speaking of? If not, would you mind walking me through to the proper place?

Uncheck the "Automatically Detect Settings" and see if that helps.
