My son has an older Emachine. It does not have a recovery or restore option. I was told by a tech. at Emachine that there isn't a restore disc for that model. Anyway, when I start the computer, the logo screen comes up, then the windows boot (logo) screen. Then, when windows starts trying to load, it reboots. It will not start in safe mode. I disabled automatic reboot on system failure. When I retarted it, a blue screen came up and basically said that winsrv was missing and couldn't start. I downloaded a winsrv.dll and burned it to a cd and put it on a formatted floppy. I set the CD Rom to start first... and nothing... then I set the floppy to run first. My command prompt came up... (A:\ ) but thats it. I can't get it to go into the right file. I don't have a Windows XP CD. My computer doesn't need one. I tried making a 6-floppy start up disc from my computer, but it got to the 5th disc and said that it was corrupt. Any suggestions?

If you have winsrv.dll on the boot floppy, when you get to the A:\ prompt, type copy winsrv.dll c:\windows\sytem32
and press enter.

When you are at the A:\> prompt can you get to the c: drive by typing c: and pressing enter?

"...It will not start in safe mode"...?

... have you tried tapping F8 key @ boot-up?

... safe mode or "last good configuration"??

... there should be a factory restore in the progams list on the T1090

... if you can'nt access s/mode or last good *

... try safe mode command prompt then type:

RSTRUI.EXE [press ENTER]

... this should bring up the xp system restore, from there select a nice early date when the pc was OK.

... then look for the factory restore listed
it wo'nt be called that though, maybe * restore *=wild (anything)

Grrrr
wat do I know?

Thanks for all the replies. First of all, I can get to the safe mode screen (by tapping F8 at logo screen), but I cannot go into safe mode. Not even safe mode with command prompt. I tried "Last known good config" and that didn't work. Just kept rebooting. Now, about the A:\ prompt. No, I can't get to any other drives. It is like there aren't any other drives but "A". But from the menu that comes up by tapping F8 (safe mode menu), there is an option "Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows Domain Controllers Only). When I ran that, it said that it was checking C:\..... then it said that it was clean and ok.

Anymore suggestions would be great. I'm not that much of a computer wiz, so go easy with the technical lingo... lol

... gulp!

... first SORRY I made a mistake

... I should of typed:

CD\ [ENTER]

CD WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RESTORE [ENTER]

RSTRUI.EXE [ENTER]

********************************************

... To do what you are trying you'll need to mount the NTFS drive which your boot up floppy can'nt see, then the software will need to be able to write to your drive to copy that file to it.

... borrow your son's friends uncle Sams XP CD

... or try these:

http://www.brothersoft.com/xp-recov...

http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/dow...

... ubuntu will see your drive(s) +CDROM and usb drives.

... keep us posted.
