CPU/Ram: celeron 633/ 192Mb
Product: eMachines stower 633ids
Comment:

Ok, I used the Restore CDs from an eMachines t1140 that I used to have (until it got fried by lightning). Everything went ok until I try to boot after the image is restored, if I try to start XP normally it shows this white progress bar across the bottom of the screen then completely freezes, I mean numlock won't even toggle the LED. If I try to boot safe mode a list of drivers loads then it gets to MUP.SYS and freezes in the same way. Any suggestions? Thanks. BTW I don't have the restore CDs that came with the etower 633ids.

Sounds like you are using a Recovery CD, from one computer, on another computer ??

Doubt will work. CD probably made to use on one machine only.

Watch for help from others.

The Emachine Restore CD's will only work on the computer model specified. They use Norton Ghost images of the factory computer settings including hardware. You can't use the cd's on other models cause the hardware will be different.

I've replaced the motherboard in 2 Emachines computers. Unless you buy the same motherboard, the Emachine Restore CD's are junk I've had to buy Windows XP Home to reload Windows. Simply because I used a different motherboard, the Emachines Cd's won't work cause the image on them is of the original motherboard.

So you'll need to get the Emachines CD's for your model (contact Emachines) or you'll need to buy Windows XP.

Ok, thanks, I see where you are coming from, but then why won't it boot in safe mode?

Same reasoning. There is different hardware inside the Emachines computer than the other Emachines system the CD's are for. That's why it freezes.

Same thing happened when I used the restore CD's after replacing the motherboard. It wouldn't boot or would freeze up.

In summary, those Emachines cd's will not help you.

Yep the XP Pro cd will work great. You don't have to format the hard drive. Boot to the CD. Start a new Windows XP install. BUT DON'T format the partition, "leave the changes intact" when the screen asks to format or not. Then at least you can keep documents and files from your old user account for example. But you might have to change the file permissions in Safe Mode for the old user account folder if it doesn't give you access to the folder. Just ask on here for help if it happens. But it might work anyways. Otherwise, if you don't need anything on the hard drive, go ahead and format the partition.

As long as the hardware is all working right, the Windows XP cd will have no problems.

You'll have to reinstall all your software though. But all your documents will be there and safe when you look at the C drive in My Computer.
