Ellipsed games screens

Hello!! I may be a bit thick when it comes to computers, but this has got me lost... Why oh why can I not play certain games on my PC without ending up with horrible, smaller ellipsed (fat egg shaped) screens? Normally I would expect this to be due to my graphics card, which is indeed VERY weak... but for heaven's sake, I used to be able to play these games fine on my old laptop which was a Pentium 100 with NO graphics card...!!
I have tried updating the graphics card drivers, Direct X, and even experimenting with different resolutions, but still my screens end up looking like this (_) Please help!!

hmmm, id look at the monitor. does it have an adjustment panel on the front of it? play around with them if so....
go into display properites and click advanced, go into the monitor tab, what's the hertz set to under screen fresh rate? it depends on your monitor really. may be set to auto, try something else like 70 and see what happens....
just some ideas.....

that sometimes happens to my brandnew computer. it happens when my computer changes to a different resolution for the game. When it happens, i use the monitor's adjustment panel to fix it, then i store it so the next time it's ok
