Comment:

I have Win 200 installed in an IDE drive and Win XP on a SATA. The computer sees the IDE as the primary drive and the menu file for the dual boot is on the IDE drive
If I try to set the SATA drive with XP as the boot drive (sing the bios. A message says there are necessary files missing.
How can I clean Win 2000 off the IDE drive and get XP to boot by default? (without reinstalling XP)

You can modify the BOOT.INI file to make the XP drive the default.

Yes. But the Boot.ini file is on the IDE drive with the Win 2K. If I remove Win2K and that file, XP on the Sata drive won't boot.

You cannot format the drive, but you can delete everything on the C: drive except the files in the C: root folder.

set the sata as the primary drive

do a repair install of XP

redo your service packs since you are at install defaults.

Won't touch your data. It's your only choice to get your boot files, boot pointer and registry pointers to be correct.

Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search
