Comment: I have lots of short windows media video files, video clips and mpegs on my computer and I'd like to edit them. All I actually want to do is cut and delete some of the video from the start and/or end of them so that they aren't so long. Does anyone know of a program, preferably a free one, that can do this for me? Thanks in advance.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for that Kurt. I have tried with Movie Maker but I've found some of the video clips I have actually take up more memory after I've cut their length. Does anyone know why or if a different program would be better? Thanks again.

Reply: (edit)Video doesn't take up RAM, do you mean the file is larger? If so, you need to set the compression ratio higher so the file size is smaller. WMV (which is the format Movie Maker will create from your video files) is a descent compression scheme and you should be able to get descent quality with a fairly small size.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the quick reply. When I say the new, shorter files take up more memory, I mean they are larger. I didn't realise that movie maker was changing the file type and/or the compression of the files I'm editing, I guess that's why the edited, shorter length movie clips are often becoming larger files. I'm not too sure if I'm able to change this within movie maker as I'm just starting out with this kind of thing. If it can't be changed, I wonder if anyone knows of an alternative program that I can use to cut my clips down to size! Thanks in advance.

Reply: (edit)Virtualdub (free) will handle AVI and 'some' MPG. But I don't think it will handle WMV. Do yourself a favor BACKUP!
