The registry values are saved in the registry. The only way to use a text editor to make changes is to create a .reg file and import it. However, I would only use that if multiple keys have to be changed at once.

They are in C:\Windows\System32\config. There are several files (such as "software", "system", etc). However, you won't be able to edit them directly with notepad.

What are you trying to do? If you want to change specific known keys to something predefined, you can use a .reg file or VBScript to edit the registry.

If you just want to browse around and change things at leisure, use the registry editor.

Out of curiosity, what is your goal? You've made several posts looking for round-about ways to do seemingly common/easy tasks.
